Alex Wilner goes coast-to-coast

The Chronicle-Herald in Halifax has become the latest Canadian paper to publish MLI Fellow Alex Wilner’s recent Op-Ed, Turning al-Qaida into heretical thugs. Alex and MLI have now appeared from Vancouver to Winnipeg to Halifax, and Canadians from coast to coast have been able to read this timely and thoughtful article. In part, he wrote:

Islamist radicalization is the lynchpin of homegrown terrorism in the West. We can fight the results through military and police methods.

But an ounce of intellectual prevention is worth a ton of military cure in this area. Since the core of radicalization is the internalization of a set of beliefs, worldviews and assumptions that legitimize violence in the name of a given cause, prevention must accomplish the opposite from within the same intellectual framework of the intended audience.
