Welcome to the Macdonald-Laurier Institute

Free To Learn, by Calvin Helin and Dave Snow
MLI authors Brian Lee Crowley, Robert Knox and John Robson continue to make waves with their call for an Economic Charter of Rights for Canadians. The Windsor Star is the latest Canadian newspaper to agree with the Macdonald-Laurier Institute’s call for federal action on domestic trade barriers. In an editorial today, they comment on MLI’s recently-released Citizen of One, Citizen of the Whole study:
So far, only three provinces -- Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan -- have moved to sign agreements to encourage more trade, investment and mobility.
As a result, the Macdonald-Laurier Institute -- a non-partisan think-tank -- is calling on Ottawa to use its constitutional authority to get rid of the barriers through an Economic Charter of Rights and then set up a commission that would deal with non-compliance.
…
As the Macdonald-Laurier Institute points out, Ottawa has the moral authority and power to get rid of interprovincial trade barriers. What it really needs is the courage to dismantle them.
Brian Lee Crowley, Managing Director of the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, was heard recently on the nationally syndicated Brent Holland Show on CKLU radio out of Laurentian University. Taking the message of Canadian Century to campus radio in Sudbury provided lively half hour discussion for listeners. Listen here… July 14, 2010.
In a video released today by the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, co-author Robert Knox provides an in-depth look into MLI’s latest study, Citizen of One, Citizen of the Whole.
In conversation with colleague John Robson, Bob tells us what an Economic Charter of Rights could mean for all Canadians. He reminds us how our “sense of being Canadian” is diminished by all the petty barriers that inhibit personal mobility and economic freedom today. With his background in negotiating on internal trade issues and his expert knowledge of the impact these restrictions have on the jobs and lifestyle of Canadians, Bob insists that the time to act is now. Watch the video (in two parts) below…

Jaworski lauds “spectacular” Canadian Century
Peter Jaworski has highlighted the Canadian Century online today at the Western Standard. He writes: Brian Lee Crowley (of the new Macdonald-Laurier Institute), Jason Clemens (Pacific Research Institute), and Niels Veldhuis (Fraser Institute) have penned what I think is a spectacular new book entitled "The Canadian Century: Moving Out of America's Shadow ." Jaworski, who is a Director of the Institute for Liberal Studies, also posted a video link to Jason Clemens' appearance at the University of Windsor earlier this year. That video is available on the MLI website… here.
On Canada Day weekend, Brian Lee Crowley introduced more Canadians to The Canadian Century on one of Canada’s most popular weekly political radio shows… The House on CBC. In conversation with Rita Celli, Crowley provided an introduction to the Macdonald-Laurier Institute’s first book publication and a primer on why Wilfrid Laurier was just a 100 years ahead of his time when he said, "…it is Canada that shall fill the twentieth century."

Celebrate Canada: Tear down the economic barriers
In a magnificent pro-Confederation speech on Feb. 8, 1865, George Brown declared: “The proposal now before us is to throw down all barriers between the provinces – to make a citizen of one, citizen of the whole.” It’s past time Ottawa kept this promise, undoing not just the economic harm of internal protectionism but also its dangerous tendency to exacerbate regional antagonisms.
