Canada's government is close to making a decision that will have an enormous lasting impact on our country.

The acquisition of Canadian construction giant Aecon by CCCI, a Chinese State-owned enterprise, is being reviewed under the Investment Canada Act and a decision is imminent.

This is not just any corporate takeover. As MLI Munk Senior Fellow Duanjie Chen has written, "CCCI’s acquisition of Aecon is undoubtedly motivated by Beijing’s aspirations for a more dominant global role and backed by its government’s financial power".

What are the stakes? What are the risks and opportunities for Canada, and how should our government approach a growing presence by Chinese state-owned enterprises?

MLI's next event is Dragon with a Chequebook: Aecon, China, and the Challenges to Canada's Policy on Foreign Investment in Ottawa, April 25, 2018.

Hosted by Brian Lee Crowley, Dragon with a Chequebook brings together some of the leading thinkers on the economic and security implications of closer ties to China to tackle these difficult questions and find the answers that will help preserve Canadians' security and prosperity:

  • Duanjie Chen, MLI Munk Senior Fellow, an economist and expert on Chinese State-owned enterprises
  • Ward Elcock, former Director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service
  • Charles Burton, former Canadian diplomat who served in China and associate professor of political science at Brock University
